It’s been a year since 8-year-old Quincy Nelson-Sweatt died from a rare form of cancer and to commemorate the anniversary of his passing, his mother enlisted his friends and classmates to support childhood cancer research.

With September being Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, Natalie Nelson wanted to do something to remember her vibrant, fun-loving son and involve his friends, who also are grieving his loss.

“It’s all been really hard this year with the kids going back to school,” she said. “It was just kind of doing something to keep his memory alive and raise some money for research.”

Quincy died Sept. 2 after battling Diffuse Midline Giloma, a rare and aggressive brain tumor with only 200 to 300 cases a year in U.S. children.

Partnering with The Cure Starts Now Foundation out of Cincinnati, Nelson spoke with officials at Rineyville Elementary School to implement a fundraiser in memory of Quincy.
