A recurring concert that has happened around New Year’s Eve for the last decade in Charleston has raised almost $500,000 for pediatric cancer research at MUSC.

The Blue Dogs’ Homecoming Concert, which this year will take place at 8 p.m. on Dec. 29 at the Charleston Music Hall, is the fundraiser. This will be its last year taking place around the new year, as the band is seeking to spend more time with far-away family in the future.

“We’ve done this event every year the same time for the last 10 years, and it feels like a good time to change it up,” said Blue Dogs founding member Bobby Houck.

The first time the Charleston country-rock band hosted this show was on their 25th anniversary as a group. That year, Darius Rucker and Hootie & The Blowfish performed, along with Edwin McCain, Danielle Howle and Radney Foster.

“It was just kind of an amazing night, and everyone just kind of freaked out about it,” recalled Houck. “We said ‘We’ve got to do this again.’”

That first year, fundraising wasn’t involved, but since then the band has taken up a cause near and dear to their hearts.

“The MUSC Children’s Hospital is a special place, and we’ve always been asked to do events for them,” said Houck.
